What is a pediatric hospitalist?

When your child requires hospitalization, your child's primary care physician may request that a specially trained physician, called a hospitalist, help oversee your child's care during his or her stay in the hospital.

With the hospitalist, your child will have the benefit of being seen by a doctor who focuses entirely on the care of children who are sick enough to be in the hospital. Our hospitalists realize your primary care physician's involvement in your child's care is important to you. So, our hospitalists take extra measures to stay in touch with your child's primary care physician throughout the hospitalization.

Benefits of using a pediatric hospitalist

The benefits to patients are numerous. Most important, high quality of care is available throughout the day or night, seven days a week. Under traditional practices, patients might see their doctors once a day during their routine rounds. This hands-on approach not only helps prevent medical complications, but also results in shorter hospital stays and lower costs. Other benefits include:

  • Quick responses to changes in a child's condition as they might occur throughout the day.
  • Enhancing communications with patients and families.
  • Coordination of inpatient management of care, which could involve several specialists.
  • In many cases, a decreased length of stay.

Because of their experience with complex illnesses and injuries, our hospitalists know when to consult with specialists. They have relationships with specialty physicians in the Illinois area, as well as world-renowned pediatric experts from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Patient care partnership: benefits for physicians

The Hospitalist Program at Condell Medical Center provides the primary care physician with an additional resource for managing the care of the hospitalized child. The hospitalist begins care either in the emergency department or with admission to the inpatient unit and serves as a link with the child and family and primary care physician to ensure the hospital stay goes as planned.

Primary care physicians remain involved in the care of the child. They receive ongoing communication from the hospitalist to ensure continuity of care and follow-up. With the primary care physician, the hospitalist plans the discharge and needed follow-up care in the primary care physician's office.

Patient satisfaction increases as the child and family have the resources of the hospitalist and questions or concerns can be addressed immediately.
